Iceland Day 7

Day 7 is our final day in this country.

The lava cave Raufarhólshellir near the airport is Iceland's fourth longest lava tunnel, located 1.5 hours away from Borgarnes. As one of Iceland's longest lava tubes, stretching for about an impressive 4,461 feet, 1,360 meters, it’s formed over five thousand years ago in a volcanic eruption.

The tunnel is open from 9 am to 5 pm and requires reservations. Our reservation was at 11 am. After a safety talk and putting on a hard hat, we went down through the tunnel in a small group with our guide. The temperature inside the cave is cooler than outside. Multiple skylights on the ceiling allow sunlight to filter in, giving the cave a picturesque and mysterious quality. The cave is heavenly in form and color, and walking through it is a truly magical experience.

Following the tour, it took about an hour to reach the car rental place and then the airport. For a stopover in Iceland, consider leaving your luggage at the car rental company, as the airport no longer offers storage facilities. If your journey continues to another European city, it's wise to buy carry-on luggage online beforehand to avoid higher costs at the airport.

Thank you for reading our Iceland travel journal. I hope it provides valuable assistance and inspiration for planning your own trip.
